Abstract
Electron donating abilities of chitosans with 8 and 67 kDa were 81.55 and 15.62%, respectively. The oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) of soluble chitosans were 139.47 ¥ìmole TE/g (8 kDa) and 61.83 ¥ìmole TE/g (67 kDa), respectively. The superoxide radical scavenging activity of the 8 kDa (46.39%) was higher than that of the 67 kDa (25.13%). All the soluble chitosans stimulated production of nitric oxide (NO) in macrophage RAW264.7 cells. Especially, NO stimulating activity of 8 kDa chitosan was superior to the 67 kDa. Similar to previous results, treatment of 8 kDa soluble chitosan exhibited higher antitumor activities against four human cancer cell lines (A549, HeLa, SNU719 and SW480) than 67 kDa soluble chitosan.
